The material

A black that never sleeps — it pulses in bronze.

Black Taurus is a biotite gneiss quarried in Jampruca, in the Rio Doce Valley of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Its banded structure was born from millions of years of metamorphic pressure: the deep black comes from biotite, while the incandescent copper and gold veins reveal oxidized feldspar intertwined with quartz.

Each slab is a unique gesture — organic, dense, dramatic. Specified by architects seeking material protagonism: a stone that dialogues with dark woods, brass, leather, and warm light, defining the room without competing with it.

Ideal for

Applications that demand presence.

Floors

High mechanical strength for lobbies, halls, and high-traffic circulation areas.

Indoor Areas

Countertops, panels, and claddings with visual weight — careful protagonism.

Wet Areas

Absorption of 0.30% favors bathrooms, outdoor kitchens, and kitchens with proper sealing.

Outdoor Areas

K coefficient = 0.96 — stable behavior on façades and patios.

Inspirations

From the stone to the project
— a narrative in bronze.

Each Black Taurus slab carries a unique signature: no two veins repeat. A repertoire of applications in kitchens, outdoor kitchens, bathrooms, and façades where the material takes the lead role.

FACI report 066/2018

Biotite gneiss (metamorphic rock) with a compact, banded structure, from Jampruca / Nova Módica — Minas Gerais, Brazil. Tests performed according to ABNT NBR 15845 (applicable parts).

Petrographic classification Gneiss Biotitic · banded structure
Water absorption 0.30% Low absorption
Compression (natural) 102.73 MPa High mechanical strength
Freeze/Thaw (K) 0.96 Retains 96% of its strength
I Identification & Petrography ABNT 15845 — Part 1
  • Rock typeBiotite gneiss
  • ColorBlack with copper and gold bands
  • StructureCompact, banded
  • GranulationMedium to very coarse
  • OriginJampruca / Nova Módica — MG, Brazil

Mineralogical composition: quartz, orthoclase, plagioclase, and biotite. The biotite is responsible for the dark background; the oxidized feldspars are responsible for the copper- and gold-toned bands and veins. The banded metamorphic structure, characteristic of gneisses, gives each slab a unique — almost pictorial — movement.

II Physical properties ABNT 15845 — Part 2
  • Dry specific mass2.69 g/cm³
  • Apparent porosity0.81%
  • Water absorption0.30%

The combination of porosity ~0.81% and absorption ~0.30% positions Black Taurus as a low-absorption material, favoring performance in wet areas with proper specification and maintenance: less tendency to absorb liquids, better response to sealers, and greater predictability in long-term use.

III Mechanical strength ABNT 15845 — Parts 5, 6, and 7
  • Uniaxial compression102.73 MPa
  • Modulus of rupture — 3 points13.81 MPa
  • Flexion — 4 points6.73 MPa

The results indicate excellent suitability for indoor and outdoor high-traffic floors, stairs, ramps, landings, and countertops with relevant spans. For structural applications, the final definition of thickness, supports, and reinforcements rests with the project's engineer, taking into account geometry, layout, and loads.

IV Durability & impact ABNT 15845 — Parts 4 and 8
  • Compression after freeze/thaw98.91 MPa
  • Freeze/thaw coefficient (K)0.96
  • Impact rupture energy~7 J

After freeze/thaw cycles, Black Taurus retains 96% of its natural strength — exceptional behavior, close to the intact material. The average impact rupture energy (~7 J) reinforces the importance of proper supports, setbacks, and well-dimensioned edges, especially on countertops and stair treads.

Validation of structural design and fastening by the engineer of record is always recommended, considering natural variations between batches and slabs.

Care & Maintenance

Beauty that lasts — with simple care.

Black Taurus is a granite (biotite gneiss): a natural stone of high hardness and very low porosity, highly scratch-resistant. Like all natural stone, it needs periodic sealing and a gentle cleaning routine to keep its shine for many years.

01

Daily cleaning

A soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive sponge, warm water, and neutral detergent. Always dry after cleaning and wipe up spills right away.

02

Sealing

Seal with a quality water-repellent, reapplied every 6 months to 2 years depending on use — the barrier that repels liquids and eases cleaning.

03

Heat protection

Heat-resistant, but thermal shock can cause micro-cracks. Always use trivets — never rest a hot pan directly on the stone.

04

Cuts & impact

Don't cut directly on the surface — it dulls both the shine and your knives. Use a cutting board and avoid dropping heavy objects.

Do

  • Warm water, neutral detergent, and a soft cloth
  • Dry the surface after each cleaning
  • Wipe up spills immediately
  • Seal every 6 months–2 years
  • Use trivets and a cutting board

Avoid

  • Vinegar, lemon, ammonia, and acidic products
  • Bleach, chlorine, and harsh all-purpose cleaners
  • Steel wool or the abrasive side of sponges
  • Resting hot pans directly on the stone
  • Cutting food directly on the countertop

After installation, wait about 24h before using the surface (curing of adhesives and sealants). Always check the instructions from your granite's manufacturer and the fabricator responsible for specific guidance.
